You dont need another tool

I was three tabs deep comparing Cursor and Claude and Grok before I had written down what I was actually stuck on. The login on a side project returned 401 on a password I knew was right, and somehow that turned into a shopping trip.

This happens more than I want to admit. A thing is broken or half done, and instead of naming the thing I go look for a better assistant. I already had two. I opened a third because a thread said it was better at reasoning. I still had not written the problem in a sentence.

You dont need another tool. You need the problem small enough that a tool can do something with it.

I used to treat tool picking like the work. Cursor vs Claude vs Grok is a real question later, I wrote that up in which tool when. First week though the choice is a stall. You download Cursor because the old editor felt like fighting the window more than the bug. You make a Claude account because someone said its better with messy notes. You open Grok because you want a take on something that might have changed this week. None of that is a problem statement.

The collection habit is easy to see once you look for it. Bookmarks. Free trials you will not cancel. A notes app full of "try this." A landing page sitting at 40% because you spent the afternoon reading which model is best for writing instead of pasting the draft into the one you already signed into.

I did that with a half-written landing page last winter. The hero was fine, I actually liked one sentence in it. The pricing section was a paragraph of hedging. I opened a new chat in a new product and typed write me a landing page. It wrote a landing page. Mine was still sitting there half done, with the one sentence I liked buried in draft 4. The new page didnt have that sentence. I had to go get it.

Same pattern with a spreadsheet I should have just finished. Columns from three exports, dates in two formats, a notes column that is basically a diary. I asked two different chats to clean this up without saying what clean meant. One of them made a pretty table. The dates were still text. I had spent forty minutes picking a tool and about four minutes describing the mess.

The first step that actually moves something is smaller than people want it to be.

Write the problem in one sentence. Not a vision. Not a stack. One sentence you could text to a friend who is already walking into a meeting.

A few I have used, badly and then better.

Bad: help me fix auth.

Better: the login form posts to /api/login and I get 401 with a valid test user, the response body is pasted below.

Bad: make this spreadsheet usable.

Better: I need one row per customer and a real date column, this export has duplicates and the dates are sitting there as text.

Bad: finish the landing page.

Better: keep the hero I wrote, rewrite only the pricing section so a person can tell what they get for free and what they pay for.

You can feel the difference in your shoulders. The bad ones invite a rewrite of your week. The better ones give the model a door and, more useful, give you a way to know if it walked through the right one.

I still write the bad ones when I'm tired. Then I get a long confident answer and I deserve it.

If you cannot get it into one sentence the problem is still too big. Cut it until you can. Fix the login is at least three problems. Is the password stored the way I think. Is the session cookie getting set. Is the client sending the body the server expects. Pick one. The 401 with a known-good user is a better start than auth is broken.

This is the part people skip because it feels like not using the new thing. Naming the problem does not look like progress on a changelog. It is the only reason the next twenty minutes work.

Once you have the sentence the tool question gets quieter. If the work lives in files and you need something edited in a folder, that is Cursor, start at getting started with Cursor. If you are staring at messy notes or a draft you have to rewrite carefully, Claude, start at getting started with Claude. If you need a current take, something that might have moved this month, Grok, start at getting started with Grok. I go into the overlap in which tool when because they all write and they all search a little and the internet will tell you there is a winner.

There isnt a winner for I have not said what I want.

A one sentence problem also saves you from the week one pileup I keep doing, including last month. Giant prompt that tries to do the landing page and the spreadsheet and the login. Switching chats halfway because the first answer was mid. Never pasting the actual error. I wrote the ugly list in the mistakes people make in week one. Most of those mistakes are just the unnamed problem wearing a nicer shirt.

Practical bit, since this otherwise turns into a talk I would ignore.

Open a note. Phone note is fine. Write three lines:

What is broken or unfinished, in one sentence.

What done looks like, in one sentence. Done is I can log in with the test user, not auth is solid.

What you will paste. The error text. Four ugly rows. The current draft, even if you hate it.

Then open the tool you already have and paste those three lines plus the ugly thing. Do not shop first.

If you do not already have a tool, pick from the sentence, not from a comparison table. Files in a folder you can open: Cursor. A long messy document or a rewrite you will actually send: Claude. A is this still true question: Grok. Sign in later today. Do not sign in after you have read five more posts about which one is winning.

I keep more accounts than I need. I am not going to pretend I closed them. What changed is I write the sentence before I open a new tab. Most days the tab I already had was enough, and the days it wasnt, I still had a sentence I could carry over.

If you want a sequence after the sentence, Cursor has a five step path starting at getting started with Cursor and ending at make it stick. Claude is getting started with Claude through do it again. Grok is getting started with Grok through keep the thread. Use those when you have picked. Do not read all fifteen first. That is collecting again, just with nicer titles.

The login is still a good first problem if you have one. Write the 401 in a sentence. Paste the body. Say what not to rewrite. Then go. The shopping can wait, it will still be there tomorrow, I checked.
